Concerning your other comments, this is a Generation Gap issue.

The cartoon is based in Star Trek, The Original Series. (note the shuttle, and the shoulders of the uniform). In that era, Communicators were flip-open boxes, much like walky-talkies.. slightly larger than cell phones of say 6 years ago. In the Original Series, the logo on the shirt was just a sewn on patch.

It's this series that is also responsible for the term "red shirts".. referring to expendable soldiers or security guards who will probably die. In the original series, Security wore Red, not Gold.
